Description : San Giovanni Battista decollato
Oil on canvas. The painting recalls the examples by Josè De Ribera (1558/97-1652), insisting on the rough realism of the subject and in particular on the Baptist's half open eyes, almost to underline the fleeting moment between life and death. Suggestive is also the chromatic game on the background, divided between the intense black and the red shades of the fabric. Relined, it is presented in a heavy frame made of lacquered and gilded wood. Neapolitan School, mid 17th century.
