Oil on canvas. The painting comes from a private collection and was published on the catalog dedicated to Giuseppe Antonio Pianca by Filippo Maria Ferri. The author of the catalog wrote: "Of extraordinary visual impact, the picture combines the admiration for antique sculpture with a vibrant feeling of existence". The Saint's body is depicted like it was sculpted with particular attention to the volume. The emotions and the feeling of "modernity" of the picture are the leading lines to analyze the painting. The painter was almost ignored by the critics until some decades ago and now it is "subject of real interest of the critics, the most inquiring, the most à la page" (as described by Anna Maria Brizio in her introduction to the commemorative exhibition in Val Sesia). The painting was famous for its fast executive skills and vitality, along with widespread agitation. Restored and relined, presented in antique frame.
