Oil painting on canvas. In Greek mythology, Homer describes Ganymede as the most beautiful of mortals. In one version of the myth Zeus falls in love with his beauty and abducts him in the form of an eagle to serve as cup-bearer in Olympus. Often depicted with an eagle and considered symbol of homosexual love, Ganymede is here depicted in his honorary role while bearing a cup and a jug. The half figure of the boy - partially draped in a floaty red coat - is rotated backwards during a fluid motion that involves his trunk, head and eyes like he was called by someone. The light tones of his skin are in contrast with the intense red of the drape and the dark background. On the back of the canvas there is a collection cartouche and label belonging to an auction of 2004. Presented in beautiful antique gilded frame. 17th century.
