Description : Ritratto di Leopoldo II d'Austria
Oil on canvas. Portrait of Leopold II of Asburgo-Lorena (Vienna 1747-1792) brother of Joseph II that was succeed by him to the throne of the Holy Roman Empire from 1790 to 1792. He followed the political line of the absolutely enlighted brother and he fought for the Leopoldine Code that brought the Tuscan Grand Duchy to become the first state in the history and that abolished death penalty. The portrait dates back to his youth and shows him in a conventional pose with the imperial emblems ( the gilded Toson, the Cross of Maria Theresa of Austria) and the red and white bandolier. The original canvas had been replaced but still in the roiginal frame. Displayed in a gilded oval frame engraved with leaves and ribbons.
