Oil on canvas. Signed Crespi top left. The young woman portrayed here holds a crystal vase, that reminds of a bottle for ointments and she is dressed and styled like a Vestal or a Greco-Roman priestess. Enrico Crespi, who came from Busto Arsizio but studied and worked in Milan, was an architect first and then a carver and painter. He studied at Brera, in the School of Francesco Hayez, he was a versatile artist, who painted historical subjects, landscapes and a large number of popular and rustic scenes that earned him the nickname of "Painter of the humble". His wide production includes many portraits, both of famous people and people close to him, from different social backgrounds. They fit well in the cultural climate of Milan at the end of the century, between Late Romanticism, Verismo and Scapigliatura. The beautiful paintin, restored and reframed, presents a small mend on the back. The frame is in style.
