Oil on canvas. The scene pictured here retraces the key stages of the Apostle Peter. The figure of the Saint takes up all of the left part of the scene: he is sitting in a cave with folded hands, with a meditative gaze turned upwards, he looks like he is thinking about his life; next to him, on top left, there is a rooster, a memory of the dramatic episode of the denial of Jesus by Peter during the Passion, as told in the Gospel ("Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.”); on the table, near Peter's hands, the keys hang, symbol of his mandate as the first Pope. These two symbols - the keys and the rooster - remind of the fragility odf faith: even the man chose by Jesus to lead His Church had been afraid and wasn't always faithful to Christ. The right side of the scene, which represents Peter's thoughts, tells the story of the calling of the Apostle to the following of Jesus: Peter remembers his humble origins as a fisher, from which Christ removed him to confer a much bigger assignment to him. The scene of the calling is inserted in a lake landscape typical of the North, in contrast with the figures of Jesus and the fishermen, but appropriate to their correct space and time location of the 1st century Palestine.
