Description
Dry card azimuth compass / “Dry card azimuth compass” in brass, glass and paper. The card is placed on a brass disc placed inside a bowl of the same material and mounted with gimbal suspension. The compass is inserted inside a wooden case. The glass is broken as shown in the photo and the paper needs to be relocated in the right place. The “Parkes and Son” business acquires this name around 1846, when James's only son, Samuel, became a partner. Samuel inherited the business, keeping the name J. Parkes & Son. The company probably ceased to exist in 1939.
