Description
Portable brass theodolite, consisting of prismatic compass, telescopic sight and spirit level, marked "Shmalcalders Patent 82 Strand London". Original mahogany case, marked "AL" on the underside, with other accessories useful for precision measurements. Charles Schmalcalder designed this theodolite to be light and versatile, appropriate for quick military or expeditionary surveys. It incorporates a prismatic compass, which Schmalcalder patented in 1812. The instrument can therefore be dated between this time and 1827, when he moved his laboratory from The Strand, 82, London. A similar specimen is in the Science Museum, London.
