Description

The Foucault spinning top is one of the earliest gyroscopes, elaborated on a prototype by Bohnenberge, and following the experiments of the more famous "Foucalt Pendulum". A wheel is placed on a ring so that the axis of the rotating disk can move independently of the ring; the function is to show the rotation of a rotating body by emulating the movements of the Earth in space. This version, slightly more elaborate than the original, was made by Elliot Bros. in the third quarter of the 19th century, in polished lacquered brass with steel fittings. Signed on the base "Elliot Bros, 30 Strand London.
