Description
Gilded brass proportional compass with hinge decorated with an engraved rosette. Signed "Le Maire à la Pierre d'Aiman a Paris", it also bears the inscription "demi Pied de Roy". Pierre Le Maire (1717-1785) took over his father Jacques' workshop in the late 1730s. He and his workers initially signed instruments with 'le Fils', so this example was probably made after 1750.
