Description : San Michele Arcangelo
Oil painting on canvas. Iconographic representation of the archangel Michael, represented winged and clad in armor, holding a sword in one hand, while holding a scale with the other. The depiction in arms derives from the Apocalypse and attributes to Michael the role of commander of the celestial army against the rebel angels lined up with the devil, and is often depicted killing the devil in the guise of a dragon; the detail of the scales instead derives from the Islamic tradition (in turn deriving from Egyptian and Persian mythology), has no foundation in Christian scriptures or in the previous Christian tradition, and attributes to the archangel the role of weighing souls (psychostasis). The painting, on the first canvas, has undergone cleaning.
