Description : Madonna del segno

Tempera on wood, with embossed and silvered metal riza. The icon of the Mother of God known as Our Lady of the Sign depicts the Virgin Mary with her hands raised in an attitude of prayer; inside a circular shield on Mary's breast there is Christ Emmanuel, with his right hand blessing. The name of "the sign" derives from a miracle, precisely a prodigious sign, attributed to an icon present in Novgorod in 1170.
