Description : Interno con figure
Oil painting on canvas. Signed lower right. Two figures, a man and a girl, sit in an interior with a barred window, which evokes a prison: the girl is sewing, the man, older and more humble, seems to be in an attitude of waiting. The powerful chromatic contrasts - the bright clothes of the girl against the gray-brown monochrome of the man, the light that illuminates the female figure from the right, against the darkness and shadow in which the male figure is placed - create a strong pathos, emphasizing the vitality of the young woman who visits and assists her imprisoned relative, deprived of his freedom, with her sewing work. The whole scene is created with the rapid, broad brushstroke, without contours typical of Bazzaro's production. Milanese by birth and training, Leonardo Bazzaro is considered a lively exponent of Lombard impressionism, dedicated to chromatic and luministic research. His very fruitful production of works was dedicated in the early years to Milanese interiors, but then attracted by open-air painting, he moved to landscape views and in particular he was attracted by the color of the Venetian lagoon, which led him to stay for a certain period in Chioggia. The painting is presented in a gilt guilloché frame from the early 1900s.
