Description : Il giudizio di Salomone
Oil painting on canvas. The scene, full of figures, sees a king who is about to challenge the knife brought to him on a tray by a servant: at his feet, a servant holds by the hand a child, the object of the dispute between the two women, one in the foreground on the right, still with another infant at her breast and who turns back towards another servant, as if to ask him for help, the other in the background in the shadows, an almost indifferent figure. The scene evokes the biblical episode of the "judgment of Solomon", in which the Israelite king wisely settles the dispute between two women who both proclaimed themselves mothers of the same child: pretending to want to divide him in two, to please both women, Solomon revealed the real mother, willing to give up her son in order to save him, in the face of the rival's indifferent willingness to sacrifice. In this painting the figure of the king dominates, with the red cloak decorated with an ermine that stands out from the rest of the scene with darker, nuanced and almost confused colors, in which different figures move, some more defined like the mother in the foreground on the right and the child in dispute, others vanishing like shadows towards the back of the scene. Restored and relined, the painting is presented in a period frame.
