Description : Santa Agnese
Oil painting on canvas. Central Italian school of the seventeenth century. According to the Latin tradition, Agnes was a noble belonging to the gens Claudia who suffered martyrdom during the persecution of Christians under Diocletian at the age of 12. The young saint is often depicted with a lamb in her arms: according to tradition, this iconographic attribute derives from the assonance with her name, which means "pure", "chaste". Also in this painting Agnes appears as a young woman holding a white lamb in her arms; his complexion and the animal's fleece shine with light against the dark background, where the red of the tunic also stands out, which evokes the blood of martyrdom. The painting, restored and relined, is presented in a period frame.
