Description
Terrestrial globe signed 'W. Harris", depicting the "various tracks and surveys of the most eminent circumnavigators and all new discoveries to the present day". Globe and horizon covered in painted paper, graduated meridian in engraved brass, mahogany frame with central turned base supported by three legs resting on brass wheels. Horizon bearing months and signs of the zodiac. The label on the globe also shows the place and year of manufacture 'No. 22, Cornhill, London, 1833'. William Harris started his business in the workshop and shop that his father Thomas had established around 1808 in London at No. 20 Duke Street. After some relocations and after the death of his father, William moved permanently to No. 22 Cornhill, also in London. They were both renowned cartographers, engravers and makers of scientific instruments, and their business flourished for almost thirty years, until the second half of the 1830s.
