Description : Maddalena penitente
Oil painting on canvas. This is a copy of the panel painting by Tiziano Vecellio, created in 1565 and currently kept in the Hermitage museum in St. Petersburg. The original painting is almost double in size, but the author of this one was still rather faithful to the St. Petersburg version, which presents the Magdalene not naked (as in other versions by the same Titian), but dressed and accompanied by some iconographic symbols : the skull, or the Memento mori, memento mori), an open book, a source of meditation, and on the left a jar, which recalls the evangelical episode of the anointing of Bethany of which Mary was the protagonist. The painting is presented in a repurposed frame from the late 19th century.
