Description : Santa Caterina da Siena e Gesù
Oil painting on canvas. 17th century Tuscan school. The saint, doctor of the Church and Patron Saint of Europe and Italy, is often depicted in the company of Jesus, albeit in different situations: she is often depicted while celebrating her mystical marriage with Child or adult Jesus; other times it is with the adult Jesus who gives her a new heart. However, this depiction, which sees the Saint and her Christ reciting the Holy Office together, is rarer: this subject is found in the Basilica of San Domenico in Siena, where Catherine's skull is preserved and venerated. The Saint, dressed in her Dominican Tertiary habit, is, according to the iconographic tradition, crowned with thorns and with the sign of the stigmata on the hand holding the book. The painting, restored and relined, is presented in an antique frame.
