Description : Ritratto di Madame di Graffigny
Oil painting on canvas. French school of the first half of the 19th century. The work is a copy of the portrait of the famous French writer, created by Louis Tocqué (1696 -1772) and preserved in the Louvre Museum in Paris. Other works from the 19th century with the same portrait are known, indicating the renowned interest in the figure of the writer, for example an identical one painted in 1836 by the painter Victorine Angelique Amélie Rumilly (1789 -1849), preserved at the Chateau de Versailles. Madame de Graffigny (stage name of Françoise d'Issembourg d'Happoncourt, married De Graffigny), was an 18th century woman of letters who, after numerous family and personal vicissitudes, achieved success in 1747 with the epistolary novel Letters of a Peruvian (Lettres d'une péruvienne) and with the Private life of Voltaire and Madame du Châtelet (Vie privée de Voltaire et de Mme du Châtelet). Famous during her life, dramatic and romantic, she was forgotten during the French Revolution, but with the advent of the feminist movement of the 1960s she was rediscovered and her works were published again. The painting proposed here has been restored and relined. It is presented in a 19th century frame.
