Description : Paesaggio con figure
Oil painting on canvas. French school of the mid-19th century. The landscape presented is a flat and green countryside, with a small stream that irrigates the surrounding land; in the foreground are the figures of some travelers on horseback watering the animals. The type of landscape can be traced back in style and above all in subject to the Barbizon school, that is to that French pictorial experience which arose between the first and second half of the 19th century, by a group of artists who worked in the village of Barbizon , located just outside Paris, near the Forest of Fontainebleau. The members of the school had different interests and artistic styles, but they concentrated predominantly on landscapes and outdoor painting, with in common the desire to elevate this genre of painting from the backdrop of classical scenes to a subject in its own right. The countryside and the centuries-old trees of the forest, as well as the workers in the surrounding fields, exerted a strong attraction to rediscover natural beauty far from the city, inspiring several generations of artists. The school was part of a broader European artistic movement tending to affirm naturalism in art and made a significant contribution to the affirmation of nineteenth-century French Realism. The work, relined, is presented in a period frame.
