Description : Scena di interno con figure

Oil painting on canvas. Signed and dated lower left. The Scottish painter David Wilkie established himself for his genre scenes, drawn from popular life, in particular from the meeting places of common people. In this scene, a school lesson is presented, perhaps of catechism (Wilkie was the son of a parish priest): the teacher in the center is greeting in an obsequious or perhaps ironic way, the boy who is entering the room late, while all the other children they are already intent on reading. Behind the master's shoulders stands out the window that opens onto the countryside landscape, from which light enters which illuminates the poor environment and the figures. The painting is presented in a late 19th century frame, with slight defects.
