Description : Bufalo a Salonicco

Pencil and watercolors on paper. Signature, date and location (Salonique) lower left. The drawing depicts a buffalo outlined in pencil like the other background elements, but which has on its back a precious drape with floral designs colored in watercolor in the red theme, which creates a strong visual contrast underlining the strength and physical power of the animal . The subject falls within the almost unique theme of the artistic production of Paul Jouve, a French painter and sculptor who dedicated his art to the study and representation of the animal world, especially the exotic one. He lived in Thessaloniki during the First World War, stationed with his army, carrying out the role of official photographer, but, as in all his numerous travels, without missing the opportunity to study the local fauna live, bringing back several drawings . His technique is a blend of meticulous detail and bold naturalism, in which he captures the essence of his animal subjects with an almost spiritual reverence. His art evokes a sense of primal vitality and noble stillness, transporting viewers into the heart of the wilderness. The drawing is presented in a frame from the first half of the 20th century (with minor damage).
