Description : Famiglia di pescatori a Mergellina
Oil painting on canvas. Franz Ludwig Catel, a German painter who settled in Rome and was passionate about southern Italy, often created scenes of popular life, often repeated and sold to tourists on the Grand Tour; in particular, this glimpse of Mergellina recurs in his production, with a view of Vesuvius, taken from inside a fishermen's house. Catel studies the effects of sunlight, frequently resorting to a compositional device that is also clearly visible in this work: he frames the view within natural or architectural motifs (trees, pergolas, arches, windows, in this case the door of the poor house) which limit a dark foreground, so as to create a backlight effect, which enhances the brightness of the landscape. Various figures animate the interior and exterior of the house. The work presented here appears incomplete: a figure is only sketched in pencil - that of the fisherman recurring in other similar canvases - inside the room on the left, just as the painting of the carriage outside, of which you can see the draft of the pencil drawing under the first color draft. The painting is presented in a late 19th century gilded frame.
