Description : Santa Maria Maddalena, copia da Carlo Dolci
Oil painting on canvas. The painting depicts the so-called "mirrophora" Magdalene, that is, the bearer of myrrh for the jar of ointment that she holds in her hands, and which refers to the evangelical episode in which the sinful woman anointed the feet of Jesus with the precious ointment, as recalls the anointing of the body of Jesus taken down from the Cross, at whose feet the saint was. It is a replica of the Maddalena by Carlo Dolci (1616 -1686) in the Vasari Corridor of the Uffizi, dating back to 1660-1670 and of which other replicas exist. The graceful face, the devout attitude, the almost mystical sense of the painting are typical characteristics of Carlo Dolci's religious painting, particularly inclined to paintings characterized by an intimate and devout religiosity, especially when it came to creating works for private devotion as in case of this Magdalene. The painting, restored and relined, is presented in a period frame.
