Description : L' attraversamento del ruscello

Oil on canvas. Signed and dated lower left. The German painter Oesterley devoted himself mainly to Nordic landscape painting, in his last period especially to Norwegian landscapes (with fjords and snow-capped mountains). In this work he proposes instead almost a genre scene, although placed in a landscape: decidedly Nordic: inside a thick wood, perhaps a forest, a couple of young commoners are crossing the stream, with the boy who chivalrously carries the girl in his arms. The two figures enliven the landscape with their colors and the joy they express. The painting is presented in a period frame.
