Oil on canvas. The dramatic scene features the figure of Christ on the cross at the culminating moment of his death, with his head bowed and the dark sky above him, as the Gospel tells us ("there was darkness over the whole land..."); the last soldiers are quickly moving away, leaving Jesus completely alone. Restored and relined, the painting is presented in a period frame.
