Description : Flora, Copia da Tiziano
Oil on canvas. This is a copy of the work of the same name by Titian, datable to around 1515 and kept in the Uffizi in Florence since 1792. In that museum the work enjoyed extraordinary popularity: in 1824 the then director of the museum was forced to establish a rule that no more than four copyists could stand in front of it at a time, with waiting times that extended for months. The meaning of the image has been widely debated: a woman of ideal beauty portrayed in half-length, dressed in a wide pleated shirt that falls from her left shoulder, almost revealing one breast; with one hand she holds the pink cloak, which highlights the naked complexion above, with the other a handful of leaves and flowers. It is these last ones that have led to her being interpreted from time to time as Flora, as the goddess of Spring or of vegetation.
