After completing his studies at the Rostov art high school, in 1916 he was called to arms and sent to the southern front. Wounded and taken prisoner first by the Austrians and then by the English, he escaped to Bulgaria, in Sofia, where he began studying at the Academy of Fine Arts. In 1925 he won an American scholarship that allowed him to travel to Italy. Arriving in Milan in 1925, he graduated with honors from the Academy of Fine Arts after attending the painting course taught by Ambrogio Alciati. During his years at the Academy, he met the painter Julia Ivanovna Lund (1905-1974), of Norwegian origins but born in Russia, who later became his wife. Despite the interruption caused by the Second World War, Karpoff produced a very vast body of work, and he quickly distinguished himself in the Milanese environment: his ability to combine a sensitivity characteristic of Slavic art with themes evoking typically Italian landscapes (specifically, Lombard ones) was particularly appreciated. Ivan Karpoff, of Russian origin but raised and established as an artist in Italy, gained recognition for his paintings, which oriented themselves toward the Italian Impressionist realism of the late 19th century; he devoted himself primarily to landscapes and portraits. In this work, he depicts a glimpse of flat countryside crossed by a wide river; a woman and her child walk along the path that runs alongside it. Framed.
