Description : Il Battesimo di Cristo
Tempera on panel. Icon from the Venetian-Cretan School, 17th century. The Venetian-Cretan (or Creto-Venetian) School refers to an important school of painting, also known as the Post-Byzantine School, a movement that flourished on the island of Crete under the control of the Serenissima of Venice between 1204 and 1669. Thanks to the political situation, particularly after the fall of Constantinople, Crete became the principal center of Greek-inspired Christian art from the fifteenth to the seventeenth centuries. In this environment, a distinctive pictorial style developed, influenced by both Byzantine and Latin traditions and movements. In particular, given the significant demand for Byzantine icons in Europe, the island quickly became a center for the production of these artworks. This work depicts the Baptism of Christ in the Jordan River: Jesus in the center, standing in the river, is baptized by John the Baptist, while on the other bank two angels stand by, ready to offer Christ his robe. Above, the sky opens and the Holy Spirit descends. The panel has a central crack, requiring restoration. The work is presented in a late 19th-century gilded frame.
