Oil on canvas. Signed lower right. Louis Hippolyte Mouchot (who later took the name Ludovic) made a name for himself in 19th-century Paris for his portraits and especially for his gallant genre scenes, often featuring 17th- and 18th-century characters and settings, inspired by the swashbuckling literature popular in the 19th century (think of Alexandre Dumas' The Three Musketeers). The work is presented in a mid-20th-century gilded frame.
