Description : San Pietro penitente
Oil on canvas. Neapolitan School, 17th century. This iconographic representation of Saint Peter, common in sacred art, particularly in the 17th century, depicts the apostle in prayer, pleading for forgiveness, contrite for having denied Jesus. The work presented here is influenced by Caravaggio, with its effects of light and shadow: only the saint's face, with its tearful blue eyes, is illuminated, while his body blends into the darkness of the background, in which only the shadows of a kneeler can be seen. The painting has been restored and relined in the past. It is presented in a mid-20th-century gilded frame.
