The Tale of Apollo and Marsyas

Oil painting on canvas. Northern Italian school of the seventeenth century. The large canvas derives from an engraving of 1562 by the Venetian Giulio Sanuto, who faithfully reproduced the homonymous work by Bronzino (1503-1572), currently preserved in the Hermitage; compared to the original, the engraving added the group of Muses and modified the landscape background by introducing views of the villages. The work is divided into four scenes, which must be read from right to left. The first scene depicts the musical contest between Apollo and the Silenus Marsyas, who played the flute so well that he was considered superior to the same god; the two contenders are performing, the god with the lyre and the silenus with the flute even upside down (to increase the difficulty of the undertaking), in front of King Midas and the goddess Minerva, recognizable by her attributes, the helmet, the spear and the shield. In the second scene Apollo is intent on skinning Marsyas, to punish him for having won the musical contest; lean on the ground next to him, his cloak and lyre. In the third scene, it is King Midas who is punished by the god for having preferred Marsyas to him: Apollo is putting the donkey's ears on Midas, while Minerva is watching. Finally, the fourth scene, in the foreground on the left, is characterized by a particular figure, identified in the faithful servant and barber of the king: since Midas had ordered him to keep the secret on his donkey ears, not being able to let off steam otherwise, he dug a hole in the ground and yelled into there his secret; in that place, however, legend has it that a bush of reeds grew that with the wind whispered "King midas has donkey ears", thus revealing the dreaded secret. The painting has been previously restored and relined, but currently needs any further color recovery. On the back in pencil there is an old attribution to the Ferrara school ("Ercole da Ferrara"). It is presented in a late 19th century style frame.

Oil on canvas. Signed lower right. The composition harks back to Sante Monachesi's production from the 1940s and 1950s, in which the artist, after a debut close to Futurism, moves on to express his figurative poetics through synthetic compositions that expand, giving space to large chromatic fields, inspired by Neo Cubism. The work is presented in a frame.

Also present label of the Galleria Fotografia Italiana with the complete data of the work. This includes the personal exhibition held in 2005 at the Galleria Fotografica in Milan, entitled Aspirazione, of which it has been said: "No narration, no recognizable reality, only evocations obtained through the evaporation of colors, in many scattered clouds: more painting than photography". The work presented here belongs to this trend.

Ink on paper. Signature, date and title below. Accompanied by authentication on photo from Galleria Giò Marconi in Milan and stamp from private archive. It is the drawing of the young artist who soon became one of the most important exponents of world surrealism, who was a poet and painter, but also a filmmaker, art and film critic, photographer and humorous designer. Born in the north of France, in 1927 he settled in Paris, where he came into contact with a group of young poets and philosophers, with whom he founded the '' Grand Jeu '' movement: play is understood as an art of living. Since 1928 he has collaborated with texts, poems and drawings for the movement's magazine and in the meantime he collaborates as an editor and reporter with various Parisian newspapers. In 1932, having exhausted the experience of the `` Grand Jeu '', he passes to the surrealist movement, collaborating on its publications and participating in its exhibitions. His humor turns towards the unusual and cruelty, more and more derisive of the absurdity of everyday life, of the tragic side of common existence, to which the spirit and the unconscious rebel, trying to access the unobservable. Knows Salvador Dalí. In 1939 he also began his activity as a filmmaker. In 1941 his first personal exhibition took place in Paris: the first buyer was Pablo Picasso. Participate in all surrealist exhibitions, including the 1947 international one in Paris. In 1951, for reasons relating to the internal discipline of the group, he abandoned the surrealist movement with others, while continuing to practice its poetics. In 1955 he also became passionate about photography. Since 1968 he has devoted himself almost exclusively to painting, abandoning the activity of humorous draftsman. In the same year he settled permanently in Milan: in Italy he exhibited in various personal exhibitions, those in Milan at the Galleria Marconi. The work presented here, an early drawing, comes from an important Milanese private collection. It is presented in a frame.

ARARPI0262383
Painting Attributed to Giovanni Antonio Burrini

Sibyl

Oil on canvas. The painting has been attributed to the production of Giovanni Antonio Burrini, a Modenese painter considered one of the promoters of the pictorial renewal of his city, thanks to the introduction of the Baroque and late Baroque renewal. In his production, portraits of historical-mythological female figures recur, always depicted half-length, as in this painting in which a young beautiful woman is depicted, half-length and turned to look to her right, dressed in rich clothes and adorned with jewels, and with her head covered by a turban, which refers to an oriental context. Historically recorded as "Sibyl", in reality the subject of the painting does not correspond to the traditional iconographic representation of the legendary prophetess, because she holds a bag, of money or jewels, in her hands. The painting has been restored and relined. It is presented in a regilded frame from the early 1900s.
