Painting The family of Darius III before Alexander the Great

ARARPI0216751
Painting The family of Darius III before Alexander the Great

Oil painting on canvas. The subject, widely represented in paintings, proposes an episode of clemency, considered by some to be a propaganda story in favor of the Macedonian leader. In the scene we see the mother of Darius III, Sisigambi, followed by the other women and children of the family, who, left prey to the enemies after the defeat of Issus, pays Alexander the homage of prostrating herself before him, reverencing him as the new king. The painting proposed here, restored and relined, is mounted on a new frame with screws. It is presented in a stylish frame.

Painting Venus blindfolding Love

ARAROT0216558
Painting Venus blindfolding Love

Oil painting on canvas. It is a small copy of Titian's painting of the same name, dating back to around 1565, of much larger dimensions and currently kept in the Borghese Gallery in Rome. In the scene on the left, the goddess Venus, adorned with her rich jewels, is bandaging the head of little Cupid, resting on her knees, while another Cupid looks curiously over his shoulder; on the right side of the scene there are two other female figures, holding the god's weapons, namely the bow and the quiver full of arrows. The meaning of the scene has been widely discussed, and it seems to identify Venus, dressed as a bride, the protectress of marital happiness who must find a balance between Anteros and Eros, between a divine, rational love (the cherub behind her) and an earthly, blindfolded one; the other two figures offer their virginal nudity together with the weapons of amorous seduction. The painting is presented in a contemporary gilded frame.

ARARCO0217897
Painting Giovan Francesco Gonzaga

Watering

Oil painting on canvas. Signed lower left. On the back there is a label with the title. Self-taught Milanese artist, Giovan Francesco Gonzaga declared "my true teacher is Nature", and faithful to her, he dedicated himself mainly to scenes with horses (a passion inherited from his experience in the Savoy Cavalry during the war) to landscapes and still lifes , always depicted "en plein air". Vittorio Sgarbi wrote about him: "The wisdom of Giovan Francesco Gonzaga lies in the drawing, which is strong and decisive..... The images vibrate with restlessness, in the sign of man's struggle against himself, in the hell of a a story that always seems to repeat the same drama. But if the preparatory drawing is admirable, this artist's color has a royalty and sensitivity that come from a musical perception of color, where the palette is expressed in sudden changes and rhythms buttons". These chromatic intensities are found in this portrait of some cows at the watering point: the shades of the sky, the earth and the water chase each other and mix around the silhouettes of the beasts, which fit harmoniously into them. Work presented in a frame.
