Theseus abandons Ariadne

Oil on canvas. The work is accompanied by the expertise of Dr. Massimo Pulini, professor of Art History at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna, writer, painter and author of the discovery of a painting by Caravaggio in 2021. the painting presented here narrates the conclusion of the love story between Theseus, son of Aegean king of Athens and triumphant over the Minotaur of Crete, and Ariadne, daughter of the king of Crete who fell in love with the hero, helped him defeat the monster and then fled with him; arrived on the island of Nasso, after a period of love, Theseus abandoned the princess, after having made her fall asleep on the shore. This is the moment depicted: Theseus standing in the centre, dressed as a royal leader, greets the sleeping girl with tenderness and a hint of caress, urged to embark by two soldiers; the princess lies on the right, abandoned on the rocks, undressed after making love, unconscious in her sleep. As Pulini well explains, "a shining and superb example of the best Bolognese culture of the early eighteenth century, the painting documents that widespread pictorial theater that enriched the great halls of the most noble Bolognese palaces". The work is attributed to Felice Torelli, born in Verona but stylistically conforming to the Bolognese painting of the first half of the 18th century. Although there is no work with this title in the eighteenth-century Bolognese sources documenting Torelli's production, Pulini clearly points out the similarities with other works by the artist always with a mythological subject, which show "a representative system similar to "Theseus abandoning Ariadne" , both in the pose of the main figure and in the spirit of the composition", analogies which lead the critic to attribute the work to the Veronese painter. Already restored and relined in the past, the painting today has several drops of color and deficiencies, requiring further restoration. The work is presented in a frame from the first half of the 1900s.
