Oil painting on canvas. The depicted saint is a young woman from a rich family with the palm of martyrdom in one hand and two snakes in the other hand. The iconography refers to the martyr Santa Cristina di Bolsena who died under Diocletian approximately in 304 at the hands of father Urbano, the emperor's officer. He tortured the Saint many times to force her to abjure the Christian faith she embraced, but she came out undamaged prodigiously. Among the tortures she had to suffer, the tradition counts the bites of snakes. The snake represents the evil traditionally, namely temptation - in this case temptation of abjuration - that the young girl defeated. Original canvas reinforced on the edges, presented in gilded frame of the early 1900s. 18th century.
