Description : La flagellazione di Cristo
Oil on canvas. The dramatic scene relives a moment of the Passion of the Christ, when it is bound, stripped naked, and scourged before being loaded of the Cross. Emerges the figure in white and contorted in the suffering Christ, the side of which grows a servant east, who holds the rope of a prisoner: the two figures describe a movement almost in sync, with the two arms the left almost parallel, the busts rotated in the same direction, the faces representing in the same manner (the mouths, the same!) , but it is then the contrast between the flesh of Christ and the shades on those of the moor, between the expression of the suffering and distressed of the Christ, and that grim and tense in the effort of his torturer, contrasts that underline the different role of the characters. Behind these two figures, which emerge as soon as mentioned the faces of the two flagellatori, one of which is wielding the whip, with the arm raised, ready to strike. The work. of excellent quality and of great pathos, is for ways of painting very close to the production of Giovan Battista Crespi, called Cerano, the painter, the lombard sculptor and architect active exponent of the Counter-reformation Milan, at the court of the Borromeo, of which he was the official portrait painter. The work is accompanied by an autograph letter, 1976, of the art critic, journalist and essayist milan Marco Valsecchi, who attributes the painting to Cerano: in addition, subsequent studies on the lombard painting of the Eighteenth century and Were, in particular, does not confirm the characteristics of style and manner that is specific to that artist, and make people choose rather for an author to him that is near, its scope.
