Description : Loth e le figlie
Oil on canvas. Venetian school. The scene recalls the biblical episode told in the book of Genesis: Lot, escaped with his daughters from Sodoma, destroyed by God for its impiety, took shelter alone in a cave. The two girls, afraid of remaining witthout a progeny, got their father drunk to unite incestuously with him. The subject has been largely reprised in art. This painting reminds of the production of Giovan Battista Langetti (1635-1676) for the pictorial style. The Genoese painter imported a style of painting defined "mysterious" from Venice, influenced by the school of the Ribera first and the example of Luca Giordano later, characterized by a frank representative realism, based initially on chiaroscuros and later open to the Venetian colour; it brought a wave of renovations in the Venetian pictorial style and was largely reprised by many authors from the lagoon who followed. The piece, restored and recanvased, is presented in a frame in style.
