Description : Grande arazzo con Babirussa
Oil painting on canvas. The large canvas depicts a pig whose physiognomic characteristics refer to the Babirusa, the characteristic swine from Indonesia characterized by as many as four tusks, larger than those of any other swine, and by a slightly bristly coat. The vegetation around is the luxuriant one of the tropical islands, the natural and unique habitat of this animal. As well as its brother boar, the Babirusa has often been the subject of painting: in all cultures and in all ages, these pigs have been considered sacred animals or animals with a strong symbolic value, representatives of energy, wild ferocity and indomitable courage, but also in the medieval tradition, with a negative meaning, linked to original sin, lust, carnality and bestiality. The canvas has several drops of color and a tear at the top right, and was previously mounted on a stretcher, as evident from the signs along the entire outline.
