Description : La Pietà con due angeli
Oil painting on canvas. Roman school of the seventeenth century. On the back there is a cartouche attributing to Marcello Venusti (1515 -1579), a painter from Como active in Rome and known for having repeatedly taken up the drawing of the same Pietà made by Michelangelo Buonarroti for Vittoria Colonna. Numerous copies were made of this drawing, some attributed to Venusti, others to anonymous Roman or Florentine authors. Peculiar to this piety is the composition of the figures: Mary in the center holds the inert body of Jesus between her legs, supported on the sides by the arms by two angels; the open arms of the Mother recall the Cross from which the Son has just been deposed, a Cross which is still visible on the hill to the left, between those of the two thieves; the attention of the Madonna is not directed to the lifeless body, but goes towards the sky in an invocation of Pietà, of Pain, of Lamentation, of Entrustment to the Father, whose Spirit already hovers over the reclining head of Christ. Relined, the canvas has small drops of color, especially along the margins.
