Description : La resurrezione di Lazzaro
Oil painting on canvas. Italian school of the seventeenth century. In the composition, the painting seems to be inspired by the homonymous work by Luca Giordano (1634 -1705), who proposed this evangelical subject several times. As in Giordano's works, the scene is divided into two halves: on the right standing in the center is Jesus, surrounded by light, with his hand raised to perform the miracle; on the left, slumped in the arms of servants, Lazarus has just returned from the dead, pale and lifeless, but with his gaze fixed on that of Christ, on a line that joins them by crossing the void between the two groups. Beyond the two protagonist figures, a host of side characters, who with their almost frenetic and decomposed movements, instead underline the static nature of Jesus and Lazarus, taken only by that special bond that is existing between them. Games of light and shadow, of bright colors and other nuances in the dark background, characterize the whole scene. Restored and relined, the painting is presented in a frame from the early 1900s.
