Description : Cristo Crocifisso con Madonna e Santi
Oil painting on canvas. Upper Venetian school of the second half of the 18th century. The painting, of remarkable executive quality, was probably a preparatory canvas for a larger painting. The Cross stands vertically in the center, with the body of the dying Christ occupying the entire upper half, surrounded by the light that comes out of the open heavens and flanked by little angels; the wind that moves the scroll above the cross is a symbol of God's presence. At the foot of the Cross, on the left, Mary and the apostle John: while the Mother's gaze is turned to her dying Son, towards whom she extends her hand in supplication, John looks at the woman, in response to Jesus' entrustment to him ("Behold your mother"). On the right side, kneeling in prayer, a Carthusian monk recognizable by his white habit, probably San Bruno of Cologne, the founder of the Order: the figure stands out for its pictorial quality and definition, in particular the play of light on the garment and on the man's head, invested by the divine light that comes from above. The work, on the first canvas, has a rather marked crack. It is presented in a coeval frame.
