Description : Il veliero dei miti
Bronze sculpture on black marble base. Signature engraved in bronze on the lower back. The work presents two stylized faces on the front, with their mouths close together ready to kiss, and surmounted by wings; on the back the figure takes the appearance of a sailing ship, with a finned tail and winged sail, on which there are the busts of two figures, male and female, between which the shape of a tree extends. The sculpture belongs to the artistic period of Gonzales entitled "Sphinxes and Chimeras", and to the theme of the "Sailing Ship of Myths": the winged faces at the front are inspired by the myth of Paolo and Francesca, and occur in different variations, both in terms of material and characterization of the figures on the back, which in this case would seem to refer to the Garden of Eden. The classic, anthropomorphic style focused on the harmony of the body's shapes is the starting point and the arrival point of Alba Gonzales. Through his figures, the artist wants to bring to light the monsters that agitate in the human soul: with the theme, "Sphinxes and Chimeras", or the beasts that are inside us, he creates a dramatization and theatricalization of the form of fantastic figuration with strong erotic-dreamlike components.
