Description : Santa Barbara
Oil painting on canvas. According to tradition, Saint Barbara, a young Christian martyr who lived in the 3rd century, was locked up in a tower by her father Dioscorus because she was asked for in marriage by many suitors. Barbara, however, converted to the Christian faith, was baptized and wanted to consecrate herself totally to God, but, discovered by her father, she was subjected to ferocious and repeated torture, until her death. In its iconographic representation, it often appears with a tower in the background, as in this case; in this work the woman holds a Cross of Lorraine in her hands, which represents a reliquary containing a fragment of the true Cross, venerated by the Dukes of Anjou. This cross is still the official cross of the Greek Orthodox Church, by which Saint Barbara is venerated, as well as throughout the Western Church. The work, already restored and relined in the past, requires further restoration due to small color detachments. It is presented in a stylish frame.
