Description : Il trapasso di San Giuseppe
Oil on canvas. The painting depicts the death of Saint Joseph who, according to the apocryphal gospels, was assisted by Mary and Jesus: the dying man lies in his bed of agony, affectionately surrounded by his wife Mary in tears, and by his putative son Jesus, who points upwards to signal the divine light ready to welcome man; at the foot of the bedside, an angel in prayer. Joseph's is considered the most desirable and peaceful form of death, of old age, in one's own bed and surrounded by loved ones, and for this reason the Saint is considered the patron of the dying and of sweet death. On the first canvas, the painting is presented in a late 19th century moulded frame.
