Description : Ritratto dell' imperatore Carlo VI
Oil on canvas. The painting depicts the Emperor Charles VI of Habsburg (1685 -1740), the last male descendant of the Habsburgs, who succeeded his brother Joseph I in the empire and who ensured the succession for his daughter Maria Theresa by having the Pragmatic Sanction approved in 1733. There are numerous portraits of him, some full-length, others, like this one, depicted as half-length with a wig, a large plumed hat and, half-hidden, the necklace with the insignia of the Golden Fleece. In particular, this work is very similar to the one in the Sartorio Museum in Trieste, which in turn is a contemporary copy of the painting by Johann Gottfried Auerbach, made between 1735 and 1740. The work, restored and relined, is presented in an early 20th-century frame.
