Painting with Penitent Magdalene

Oil painting on canvas. This is a copy of the panel painting by Tiziano Vecellio, created in 1565 and currently kept in the Hermitage museum in St. Petersburg. The original painting is almost double in size, but the author of this one was still rather faithful to the St. Petersburg version, which presents the Magdalene not naked (as in other versions by the same Titian), but dressed and accompanied by some iconographic symbols : the skull, or the Memento mori, memento mori), an open book, a source of meditation, and on the left a jar, which recalls the evangelical episode of the anointing of Bethany of which Mary was the protagonist. The painting is presented in a repurposed frame from the late 19th century.

Tempera on paper applied to canvas. Signed lower right. It is accompanied by photo authentication signed by the artist. Gianni Dova was an exponent of Geometric Abstraction painting, then Spatialism, Nuclear Painting and Surrealism. The work presented here is part of the production of the early 1970s, which began following a trip by Dova to Brittany in 1967 which profoundly affected him, showing him a nature rich in symbolic ferments: in his works the artist deepened his reflection on the depths marine and created new canvases of flights over water and gardens. Dova also began the production of tempera on paper in this period, which would last the entire decade. Dova said of his painting: "Painting is just a means of understanding reality. I know and understand the world through colour. I start from an abstraction to understand reality. I don't enjoy painting: I'm interested in being involved in the work and waiting, on the canvas, for the final moment" The work is presented in a frame.
