Description : Sant'Agata

Oil painting on canvas. At the bottom right there is the signature Prof.ssa EA Ciappa and the words Copia da Stanzione. The reference is to the famous Neapolitan painter Massimo Stanzione (1585-16569), active mainly in Naples during the Baroque period and considered one of the most important painters of the seventeenth-century Neapolitan school. In reality the work from which this painting is copied is the Sant'Agata preserved at the Certosa di San Martino in Naples, dated 1640, often referred by critics to Massimo Stazione, but which is instead by the hand of Francesco Guarini (Later modified in Guarino, 1611 -1656), trained in Naples with the naturalist followers of Caravaggio, in particular Ribera and the first Stanzione. The original painting, actually much smaller in size, was replicated in two versions: the young martyr saint, who suffered the martyrdom of having her breast amputated for refusing to renounce her faith and marry the Roman proconsul Quinziano, is depicted in half-length while with his right hand he covers his mutilated chest: in the original version, the blood on his clothes stands out, while in later versions this macabre element is removed. The copy presented here is based on this second bloodless version, which is able to reproduce the gaze of the young woman who looks straight into the eyes of the observer: a "sharp" and profound gaze, mixed with lacerating pain but also with sweet determination, that which only trust in the divine will can give. Nothing is known about the artist, Professor Ciappa, whose surname also refers to the Neapolitan painter Carlo Ciappa, who in his vast production of Neapolitan landscapes and genre scenes, also created several author's copies of ancient paintings, among which the same subject, this Saint Agatha in the bloody version. The painting was restored by us (traces on the back). It is presented in a mid-20th century setting.
