Description : La visitazione di Maria

Oil painting on canvas. Bolognese school of the late 17th-early 18th century. The beautiful scene illustrates the evangelical episode, told in the Gospel of Luke, of the visit of Mary, already waiting for Jesus, to her cousin Elizabeth, who is about to give birth to John the Baptist. The meeting between the two women, in which Elizabeth recognizes Mary as the "Mother of her Lord", gives rise to the poetic song of the Magnificat, in which the Virgin exalts the power of the Lord who used her for the project of salvation . This is the moment immortalized by the painting, that of the proclamation of the Canticle: Mary praises God, while Elizabeth welcomes her with tenderness; on both sides, in the background, the two male figures, on the right Joseph, Mary's husband, on the left Zechariah, Elizabeth's husband, who participate in the event as spectators. The scene is located at the entrance of a building that recalls the style of the pictorial period. The composition and style refer to the ways of Marcantonio Franceschini (1648 -1729), an artist active mainly in Bologna. The painting has been restored, but is still on first canvas. It is presented in a gilded frame from the late 19th century.
