Description : Crocifissione
Oil painting on canvas. Italian school of the seventeenth century. This large and rich composition takes up the famous canvas by Tintoretto, painted in 1565 for the Scuola Grande di San Rocco in Venice. This work was completed by Tintoretto in just one year, despite its colossal dimensions (12.24 x 5.36 metres). The painting proposed here is a counterpart representation of Tintoretto's original, probably because it was taken from one of his graphic representations rather than live ones, in particular from the graphics created at the beginning of the 17th century by the engraver Egidius Sadeler, a counterpart copy and with some variations of the previous print by Agostino Carracci. Our painting also presents variations of the theme in small details, many of the background and the surrounding landscape, but the most significant variation is the elimination of the two figures of soldiers playing the dress of Christ at dice, hidden in the original behind a stone wall at the bottom right of the Cross, replaced in this representation by some female figures: we see two women intent on explaining to two little girls the event they are witnessing, as the gesture clearly underlines. One of the girls is richly dressed, with strings of pearls in her hair, perhaps to indicate a relationship with the client. These figures express the didactic significance of the work, intended to "tell" the public the events of the Passion of Christ as narrated in the Gospels, with all the details and figures narrated. In fact, all the main characters of this drama are found in the work (the followers of Jesus, his persecutors and enemies, the two thieves crucified with him, the crowd who assist), all the instruments of the Passion (the Cross, the nails, the ladders, the sponge soaked in vinegar, the spear to pierce the side), the location of the event on the top of a bare cliff, Golgotha, from which the view opens onto a landscape that instead refers, as a pictorial custom of the period , to the places of the client. Overall, the work, although also different in terms of colors compared to the original, is effective and has a great scenographic impact. The canvas, restored and relined, is presented in a period frame.
