Oil painting on canvas. Signed and dated lower right. The painting, coming from a private collection in Pavia, is published on page 73 of Simona Morani's monograph dedicated to the artist Primo Carena (Bolis editions), with the presentation signed by the art critic Rossana Bossaglia. The lake landscape well expresses the subdued intimacy associated with the rigorous realism that characterize the pictorial production of the painter from Pavia. In his landscapes Carena tends "to capture the atmospheric reality of the places without indulging in descriptivism... but constantly supported by a lyrical vein, which is the underlying motif of all his production". The work is presented in a style frame. Two Meissen porcelain jugs with "onion decoration". The "Zwiebelmuster" or "Blue Onion", commonly known by us as the "Onion Decoration", has become somewhat of a symbol of the Meissen Manufacture over the centuries. It is painted in cobalt blue below deck and depicts highly stylized flowers, trees and fruit. The oldest piece made in Meissen with this decoration, inspired by a Chinese drawing from the Kangxi era, is dated 1739 and was painted directly by Hoeroldt. There are stylized peonies, Japanese peaches, asters and pomegranates that develop sinuously around a bamboo cane. Each of these elements has a precise meaning in oriental symbolism. They represent: longevity (bamboo), good luck (peony), cheerfulness (aster), immortality (peach) and fertility (pomegranate).

Glimpse of the Venetian Lagoon with Boats

Oil painting on canvas. Signed lower left. The Trieste painter Giuseppe Pogna dedicated himself mainly to landscapes, and specifically to seascapes, depicted with intense naturalism permeated by lyricism. Recurring in his production are lagoon or maritime views, similar to this one, animated by fishing boats, whose orange sails stand out well against the true-blue background of sea and sky, and with the coastal profiles just outlined in the distance. The painting is presented in a gilded frame from the early 1900s, with several small defects.

Terracotta sculpture painted in polychrome with a tilting head, depicting the figure of a Chinese dignitary in a seated position in the act of clutching a fabric with his left hand, while the right hand is placed on his belly. The sculpture rests on a marbled base. Slight loss of color and restoration on the headpiece. The magot, little men originally portraying Pu-Tai, the Chinese god of happiness and abundance, were born in northern China and between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries reached Europe, where like many other chinoiserie they became the status symbol of aristocratic houses.

Antique Painting with Religious Subject Oil on Canvas XVII Century

Oil painting on canvas. Neapolitan school of the 17th-18th century. It is a traditional scene of the deposition of Christ from the Cross, with the inert and pale body lowered into the arms of his mother Mary, in turn embraced and supported in her pain by the disciple John, and around, sharing in the mourning, two pious women and two disciples. The scene is characterized by a diagonally descending linearity, which follows the body of Jesus, starting from the pole of the Cross raised on the left and ending with the woman crouched to embrace Jesus' feet on the right. All around, a bare and gray background, which underlines the drama and emptiness that it creates. Restored and relined, the painting is presented in an early 20th century frame.

Grandma and Child

Oil painting on canvas. Signed lower right. The scene, set in a working-class interior, sees an elderly woman sitting on a small chair, busy preparing an egg for her grandson, who is sitting in front of her, concentrated on waiting for the food, while holding the plate to the ninth. Juan Bautista Guzman was an exponent of Spanish costumbrismo, more specifically Andalusian, an artistic and literary movement that developed in Spain in the first half of the 19th century, in the wake of European Romanticism and Orientalism, which created works of art taking inspiration from customs and popular uses. The work is presented in a style frame.

Oil painting on canvas. Signed and dated lower left. The Milanese artist Roberto Borsa has distinguished himself for his painting, mainly of landscapes, defined as "brilliant and spirited" created in a "very robust and warm" style, in which the impressionist derivation of the search for light effects, however, remains bound to the realist tradition of the late nineteenth century in Lombardy. The work is presented in a frame.

Ticino with Sunbathers

Oil painting on canvas. Signed lower right. In the production of the Pavia painter Primo Carena the classic theme of bathers at the river is taken up several times. However, if in the 1940s this Cézannian-inspired subject was presented as the protagonist of the scene and endowed with its own vitality, in the 1980s it underwent a development: the figures are placed in a dilated and broad landscape, of which they represent a part, and they are depicted in rigid poses, devoid of movement, which almost look like mannequins. The work is presented in a frame.

Pomegranates, 1982

Oil painting on canvas. Signed and dated lower right. The Pavia painter Primo Carena dedicated much of his production to still lifes, which refer to the theme of "vanitas vanitatum", wanting to express, with different nuances over the years, the melancholy of the transience of life. Pomegranates are often depicted: particularly in the 1980s, as in this painting, the fruits are immersed in a silent atmosphere with dark, almost metaphysical tones. The painting is presented in a frame.

Modern Painting P. Carena Oil on Cardboard Italy 1950s-1960s

Philosopher

Oil on cardboard. Signed lower right. Coming from a private collection in Pavia. The painting proposes a subject taken up several times by Primo Carena, both with groups of several characters inserted in a landscape, and with a solitary figure as appears in this painting, which belongs to the production of the 1950s. The man on the beach, in the seated pose leaning with his elbow on a marble capital, and in the cloth resting on his legs, recalls the elderly character sitting in a work by De Chirico, the Salute to the Argonauts, and well underlies the reference to painting metaphysics that the painter from Pavia wanted to express in his figure paintings of the 1950s and 1960s. The work is presented in a frame.

The painting, coming from a private collection in Pavia, is published on page 63 of Simona Morani's monograph dedicated to the artist Primo Carena (Bolis editions), with the presentation signed by the art critic Rossana Bossaglia. The small glimpse of the French city belongs to the decade of the 1940s in which the painter from Pavia, who has always favored the landscapes and views of his city, made several trips abroad, finding new subjects for his works. The foreshortening well expresses the subdued intimacy associated with the rigorous realism that characterize Carena's pictorial production. In his landscapes Carena tends "to capture the atmospheric reality of the places without indulging in descriptivism... but constantly supported by a lyrical vein, which is the underlying motif of all his production".
